Sunflower in the Garden

We have an abundance of fruit and vegetables in our garden, but I also love to grow flowers.  I think it’s important to have flowers in the garden, not only as a bug deterrent, but also because they add a sweet aroma along with their colorful beauty.

One of my favorite flowers is the Sunflower.  She is so bold and beautiful. I took this picture a couple of years ago while we had several popping up all at once.  I am getting ready to plant another crop soon.  We don’t have to worry about frost in Hawaii so I can plant them anytime.

Sunflowers prefer full sun and well drained soil.  The towering stalks of the sunflower can reach up to seven to 12 feet, with large heads measuring up to 14 inches across!  The stalks are sturdy and the flowers follow the sun throughout the day.  Children and adults get a sense of happiness when admiring this beauty.

As you get ready for spring, don’t forget to pick up a pack of sunflower seeds for your garden!
